Who we treat

Compulsory Third Party (CTP)

A motor vehicle accident can result in a range of spinal injuries, from whiplash and soft tissue injuries through to disc herniation, nerve compression, and more complex spinal conditions. While many people recover with time and appropriate treatment, some injuries require specialist assessment and ongoing care.

Harbour Spine Surgeons provides specialist assessment and treatment for patients injured in motor vehicle accidents. We work within the NSW Compulsory Third Party (CTP) scheme and collaborate closely with GPs, insurers, rehabilitation providers, and legal representatives where required to support timely access to appropriate care and the best possible outcomes.

Our Commitment

After a motor vehicle accident, spinal injuries can range from whiplash to disc herniation, nerve compression, fractures, and other complex conditions. We provide timely specialist assessment and clear, evidence-based advice on both conservative and surgical treatment options, while ensuring comprehensive documentation for those involved in managing your claim.

Within our team we have surgeons who accept compensable patients, including those covered under the NSW Compulsory third party (CTP) motor accident scheme. With five fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeons across multiple Sydney locations, we can usually offer prompt appointments, including expedited access where clinically appropriate.

Motor accident (CTP) claims: how it works

In New South Wales, injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident may be covered under the Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Motor Accident Injuries Scheme, which is regulated by the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA). Most patients are referred by their GP after lodging a claim with the relevant CTP insurer, who is responsible for managing approvals for treatment and related services.

At Harbour Spine Surgeons, we work closely with GPs, CTP insurers, case managers, and other treating health professionals to facilitate timely assessment and approved treatment, helping to minimise unnecessary delays.

Where required, our surgeons provide comprehensive specialist reports and assessments to support diagnosis, treatment planning, and claim management, with recommendations focused on recovery, restoring function, and achieving the best possible patient outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral?

Yes. A valid referral from your GP or another medical specialist is required to see one of our spine surgeons. If your injury is being managed under a Compulsory Third Party (CTP) motor accident claim, your CTP insurer or case manager will usually be involved in approving specialist consultations and treatment. Our team can assist with confirming approvals before your appointment.

Will my appointment and treatment be covered?

For an accepted CTP claim, approved consultations and treatment are generally funded by the CTP insurer. Our team will assist in confirming  the necessary approvals before your appointment and will advise you of any requirements relating to pre-approval or potential out-of-pocket expenses.

Please note: funding arrangements may vary depending on your individual claim and insurer approval.

I have whiplash - do I need surgery?

Most whiplash-associated disorders and soft tissue injuries following a motor vehicle accident improve with conservative management and do not require surgery. Our surgeons provide expert assessment and advice on both non-surgical and surgical treatment options, recommending surgery only when it is clinically appropriate and likely to provide meaningful benefit.
